3 reasons to mediate your divorce

Many of us assume a divorce will be a knock-down, drag-out process. We think of courts, legal fees, and bad blood. However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Mediating a divorce offers a solution that puts your goals at the forefront and helps to preserve the dignity of everyone involved.

If the following three things are important to you, mediation might be the way to go.

Maintaining privacy

Court proceedings, including divorce, are a matter of public record. For couples who hold a prominent position in their community, whether they are small business owners or participate in local government, having their private affairs aired in the public courts is not ideal. In mediation, a trained professional can help you and your spouse reach an agreement that will help you both move on, without involving the courts.

Lower costs

Generally, mediation provides a more amicable divorce solution at a fraction of the cost of litigation. Divorces conducted in the courts can take months to resolve, or even years. That means months or years of paying attorney’s fees. An experienced mediator can help you reach a solution more efficiently.

Preserving relationships

In some cases, it is essential to maintain a civil connection between ex-spouses. This is especially true when there are children involved. In shared custody arrangements, a person must see their ex on a regular basis, which can be extremely difficult following contentious divorce litigation. By working together through mediation, you and your ex-spouse can establish a working relationship moving forward, to the benefit of your children.
